What are Dermal Fillers?
We use only the best dermal fillers at The Sperrin clinic – We use THE BELOTERO RANGE by Merz. There are different types of filler within these ranges – our doctor will decide which one is most suitable for you. All our fillers contain a local anaesthetic which numbs the area during the injections.
The use of dermal filler in the lip area is a very effective way of replacing lip volume which has been lost over time – to make the lips look fuller. Filler can also be used to create definition between the lip and the surrounding skin. It is also an effective way of treating ‘smoker’s lines which can appear above the top lip. Often there is asymmetry between the top and bottom lip and filler can be used to improve this. In the lip area 1ml of filler goes a long way, so very rarely would we ever advocate the use of more than 1 syringe.
What are dermal fillers made of?
The active ingredient of the fillers we use is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the body. The hyaluronic acid in our fillers is man-made and has a much better safety profile than older fillers made from animal sources or silicone.
Is the procedure painful?
The lip area is probable the most sensitive of all the areas we treat. However, the local anaesthetic within the filler works very well. Because the lip area is so sensitive and has a good blood supply, it does mean that bruising and swelling can occur. We would usually recommend that you have your treatment either on a Friday evening or before 1 or 2 quiet days (especially if it is your first time).
How long will the effects last?
We find our clients return every 6 – 9 months to have their treatment re-done. The visible improvement will be immediate.
Can anyone have their lips filled?
You may not have filler injected if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Clients of any age can have this treatment. If you are prone to cold-sores, our doctor may recommend a course of anti-virals after the injections to prevent a breakout.
We do not treat anyone under 18 years.
After-care
As after any injection we recommend as little touching of the area as possible for the first 24 hours.
